After leaving Craig, Steve began a career that logged over 14,000 hours in 140+ airplanes, gliders, helicopters:
- 1971 - 1975: F4D/E pilot, IP, Stan/Eval 22TFS/36th TFW Bitburg, Germany
- 1971 - 1977: Air Liaison, O-2A, 101st Airborne Division, Ft Campbell, KY
- 1978 - 1979: USAF Test Pilot, Edwards AFB (Guy Gardner was an IP)
- 1979 - 1982: Test Pilot, RAF Exchange Program, Boscombe Down, UK
- 1983 - 1985: Test Pilot IP/DCO Test Pilot School, Edwards AFB
- 1985 - 1988: F-15 Combined Test Force Director/SqCmdr, Edwards AFB
- 1988 - 1990: Deputy Commandant USAF Test School, Edwards AFB
In 1990, Steve retired from active duty as LtCol (below the zone) and began his civilian career:
- 1990 - 2005: Delta Airlines, Captain, B-727/737/757/767/MD11 (Retired)
- 2003 - Present: Chariman, SAE International Transport
- 2005 - Present: Manager Flight Operations/Chief Pilot, Boeing Integrated Defense Systems, Wichita, KS. (KC-767 Japanese/Italian AF), KC135, B52s
Steve is a current member of SAE International, American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics, AFA, Daedalieus, CAP, Experimental Aircraft Association (Cincinnati Warbirds, Squadron), AOPA, and MOAA.
Steve and Linda have 3 grown children: Shannon (35, 2nd 71-06 baby after the Simnachers) living in Palo Alto, CA; Ryan (32) living Portland, OR (tours with his band "The Swords Project"; and Brandon (28) living in Portland, OR. (A link for Ryan's band: www.absolutelykosher.com/swords.html)
In December of 2020 Steve was awarded the FAA's Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award and is now working on to test the Misubishi Spacejet.
