| In December of 1990, Guy Gardner was pilot on Space Shuttle Mission STS35 onboard the Columbia. Primary objectives were round-the-clock observations of celestial sphere in ultraviolet and X-ray astronomy with ASTRO-1 observatory. Other experiments: Shuttle Amateur Radio Experiment-2; ground-based experiment to calibrate electro-optical sensors at Air Force Maui Optical Site (AMOS) in Hawaii; and crew conducted Space Classroom Program - Assignment: The Stars, to spark student interest in science, math and technology. Mission cut short one day due to impending bad weather at primary landing site, Edwards Air Force Base, CA. Science teams at Marshall and Goddard Space Flight Centers estimated 70 percent of planned science data achieved.

| From Dale: I instructed Vietnamese Air Force pilots at Webb AFB before the end of that conflict. They were an interesting group. All but one were from wealthy families (fathers were Dr.’s, professors, etc), they spoke at least 3 languages (Vietnamese, French & English) and were good pilots. The one scruffy guy (front row sort of in front of me) was a North Vietnamese defector. He had walked down the Ho Chi Minh trail carrying two rockets that were launched into Saigon. After the launch they told him to walk back to North Viet Nam and get two more - he defected instead.

From Dale: When I was stationed in Korea (1984) I went to the Osan O’Club (surprise) to watch a Bowl Game & enjoy a cold adult beverage. There was an odor of pipe smoke hanging in the air. I looked to see who the culprit was & I noticed he had two pipes - one he was smoking & the second cooling in the ashtray. I thought I used to know a guy in UPT who did that, a Marine named Chuck Collins. It was Chuck. He was a civilian contractor for Fairchild. He was there with his family. They returned to Randolph AFB but the trail ends there.
